I Think They Were Confused

by a patient

When I told my doctors my choice not to have breast reconstruction after a breast cancer diagnosis, they asked me to speak with a psychiatrist. They compared me to a hysterical woman who did not have cancer or the BRCA gene but insisted on a mastectomy. “But you will get gender confused,” said the nurse at the MRI center, just after I told her I had chosen not to reconstruct my body.
I think they were confused.
