Research in all its forms is key to our mission

Stories, observations, published research, and case studies are all part of identifying the pathologies of care and working towards careful and kind care. We have a group within our community who is working to build an evidence base. As their findings emerge, you’ll find them here. In the meantime, we offer a sampling of stories and published research to get you started and some tools and support for doing your own story collection.

Interviewing and Storytelling

Interviewing to elicit stories has four key parts: preparation, active listening and insightful questioning, transcription and editing, and storyteller review.

Tips on Interviewing from Fellow Melissa Rkingsley

  • Prepare

    Know a bit about the storyteller’s topic and reflect on what you may be bringing to the conversation.

  • Hold Space

    Let the story free flow, even ramble at times. The fewer interruptions the better.

  • Transcribe and Edit

    Transcribe the interview through whichever format you choose. Turn the interview into a story by pulling out parts and putting them in an order that supports the intended context and flow.

  • Storyteller Review

    The last step is to ask the storyteller to review their story before it is used. This signals gratitude and respect. The storyteller has the right to change their mind, which understandably can happen (albeit rarely), even with the standard offer of anonymity.

We developed these cards as a way to help patients and clinicians talk about what can make conversations hard. The cards are a great way to foster discussion drawing from personal experiences. 

The cards can be used to capture stories one-on-one or as a catalyst for group discussions at a workshop or conference.
