Patient Revolution Symposium in Brazil
The Patient Revolution Symposium, held on August 7th, 2024, featured conferences, lectures, and the participation of patients and their families. The GHC Bioethics Committee, the Brazilian Institute of Patients’ Rights (IBDPAC), and the Patient Rights Observatory of the Postgraduate Program in Bioethics at the University of Brasília conceived the Symposium, which now has more than 1.500 views on YouTube.
Its supporters were The Patient Revolution, the Camaleão Institute, the Oncoguia Institute, and the PaliAtivo Institute, all patient organizations.
The Symposium featured two guest speakers: Rogério Amoretti, founder of the GHC Bioethics Committee, and Sheila Moroney, Executive Director of The Patient Revolution. In addition, we had three Thematic Panels: one on patient- centered care, one on Patient Rights, and the third on Decision-Making in Healthcare. All of the participants were researchers, healthcare professionals, and patients from our partner Institutes.
MORNING - PATIENT CENTERED CARE
In the morning, the theme was “Centred-Patient Care.”We had the following topics and speakers: Interfaces between Clinical Empathy and Patient-Centered Care - Aline Albuquerque; Patient-Centered Care in Practice: How to do it? - Thatianny Paranaguá; and The patient’s voice - Renan Moreira Garcia, from Camaleão Institute.
AFTERNOON - PATIENTS’ RIGHTS
The panel discussed “The challenges in enforcing patient rights “in the afternoon. The lectures and the speakers concerning this panel were The Health Professional as a Promoter of Patient Rights – by Caroline Rech, Health Literacy and Patient Rights – by Priscila Amaral, and The Patient’s Voice – by Patrícia Ferreira and Isis Ferreira, from PaliAtivo Institute.
EVENING - DECISION MAKING IN HEALTHCARE
In the evening, the central theme was “Decision-making in Healthcare.” Cintia Tanure presented on Shared Decision-Making in the Context of Palliative Care; Luciana Musse presented Crisis Card and Other Decision-making Support Tools in Mental Health; and Silvia Ferriti, from Oncoguia Institute, presented The Patient’s Voice. Throughout the day, the Symposium had a significant audience and participation, demonstrating the correctness of the bet made by its creators and organizers. Brazil needs to move towards a new healthcare culture, respect patients’ rights, affirm partnerships with healthcare professionals and break away from the industrialization of medicine.
The next symposium is already being planned for August 2025.
