Summer Allen, MD is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the Mayo Clinic, in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Allen serves as a faculty at the Knowledge and Evaluation Research (KER) unit at the Mayo Clinic. Previously, she was the Medical Director of Patient Experience for the Mayo Clinic Health System (Southeast Minnesota region), and led Patient Engagement for the Mayo Clinic Office of Population Health Management. Her family medicine practice includes obstetrical care and focuses on women’s health and patient education. Dr. Allen has research interests which include understanding what it means to engage patients in care, improving their experience with care (including cancer survivorship transition to primary care) and patient care innovation (including minimally disruptive medicine and shared decision making).
After receiving her B.A. from the University of Florida, she graduated from Mayo Medical School and completed her Family Medicine residency training at the Mayo Clinic. She has published 12 peer-reviewed papers and is actively involved in professional education. Dr. Allen is passionate about solving problems of patient care by fostering partnership among patients, communities and clinics, as exemplified by her work on Patient Voice, a project which focuses these efforts in rural communities and is funded by CMS.
